Resident physicians and medical student members of the NCAFP are encouraged to become actively involved in the leadership of our association. The following individuals are currently serving in active leadership roles

Matthew Kanaan, DO

Dr. Kanaan is currently a Family Medicine resident at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC and will be Chief Resident during his 3rd year. He graduated from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in June 2009 and also has an M.S. degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Central Florida. Dr. Kanaan and his wife live in the Raleigh, NC area where they plan to stay after graduation.
Mo Shahsahebi, MD, MBA

Dr. Shahsahebi graduated from University of California, Irvine School of Medicine in 2010. He immigrated to the US at age 6 from Iran and grew up in Southern California. He earned his Bachelors degree in Psychobiology from UCLA and an MBA from the UC Irvine Paul Merage School of Business. His professional interests include health policy, health leadership and sports medicine. Away from work, Mo enjoys basketball, football, music and time with friends and family.
NCAFP Foundation Resident Physician Trustees
The following resident physicians are serving on the NCAFP Foundation Board of Trustees.
NCAFP Resident Leadership Positions
The following positions enable North Carolina family medicine residents to participate and help lead the NCAFP.
Resident Director- Shall sit as a voting member on the NCAFP Board of Directors, run any meeting of the Resident Physicians' Section and shall be this Academy's Delegate to the NCFMR. Funding will be provided to attend state and national meetings as outlined in the NCAFP Board Policies.
Resident Director-Elect- Shall sit as a non-voting member on the NCAFP Board of Directors. If the Resident Director is unable to attend any NCAFP Board Meeting or the NCFMR, the Resident Director-Elect shall have voting privileges on the NCAFP Board of Directors or attend the NCFMR as the official State Delegate. Funding will be provided to attend state and national meetings as outlined in the NCAFP Board Policies. The Resident Director-Elect automatically succeeds to the position of Resident Director.
Foundation Resident Trustee - (2) Residents per year will be elected to sit on the NCAFP Foundation Board of Trustees. Position responsibilities are to represent the residents' perspective to the Foundation when appropriate and to communicate the happenings of these meetings with the Resident Section. Funding is provided for residents in these positions to attend the Winter and Spring Meetings as outlined in the NCAFP Board and NCAFP Foundation Policies.
Resident Program Liaison- (1) Resident from each program will serve as the communication point person between the NCAFP and their respective program. These residents are typically either first- or second-year residents that have an interest in leadership and in becoming more involved in the Academy in the future.
Resident Council Representative- (4) Residents will be elected annually to sit on the (4) different core NCAFP Councils. Position responsibilities are to provide resident input when appropriate and to communicate the happenings of these meetings with the Resident Section.
